Acushnet

A pleasing suburb of New Bedford, the name “Acushnet,” comes from the Wampanoag “Cushnea,” meaning “peaceful resting place near water.” Orchards, old stone walls, cranberry bogs, and pine forests dot the landscape. Its annual Apple-Peach Festival in September, held on the grounds of a 19th-century schoolhouse, is just one of the welcoming and fun activities hosted by the town. Proximity to UMass Dartmouth and New Bedford Regional Airport nicely suits commuters, faculty, and all kinds of professionals seeking homes for sale in Southeastern Massachusetts.

Farms, golf, and waterside attractions are all part of daily life in this charming town. Acushnet also has maritime heritage thanks to its proximity to Buzzards Bay and New Bedford. In the 19th-century, the town was home to several whaling captains, while Moby-Dick author Herman Melville (1819-1891) sailed aboard a whaler called Acushnet before he wrote his famous novel.
